Blending isn’t just an art, it’s economics and a plan

Every winemaker knows a great blend can turn "ok" wines into something surprising, and turn great wines into something unforgettable.
But most folks don’t realize the best blends are not only created in the cellar…they’re designed in the vineyard.
Here’s the hard truth: waiting until after fermentation to “fix” a wine is fine, but it isn't ideal. It's like renovating an old house - you can't choose the original footprint.
It can be expensive, reactive, and sometimes it's hard to find all the pieces you need to make the wine turn out the way you want.
That’s why we plan blends before the fruit is even picked.
At Texas Vine Country, we work with winemakers to line up vineyard blocks and varietals that complement each other from the start.
That means every pick, every ton, and every lot is chosen with your final blend - and your bottom line - in mind.
My three personal favorite vineyard blend partners are:
RED Primitivo + Mourvède: Primitivo brings ripe red fruit, spice, and color, while Mourvèdre adds smoke, leather, and structure.
ROSÉ Muscat Blanc + Saignée Rosé: Saignée rosé brings rich fruit flavor, dark color, and high alcohol (or residual sugar), while a touch of Muscat Blanc boosts the nose and aromatics, reduces alcohol, and lightens the color.
WHITE Marsanne + Vermentino: Marsanne brightens aromatics and brings the main body, while Vermentino balances with acid and crisp brightness.
When you coordinate your fruit purchase program with your blends early, you control the chemistry and the economics. You can balance volume with premium components, hedge against vintage variation, and avoid the “post-fermentation panic” that can kill profit and consistency.
Blending on purpose - rather than out of panic - also gives you more flexibility when Mother Nature throws curveballs like early/late picks due to weather.
We’ll help you plan and execute from the ground up - matching varietal, clone and pick timing to your exact style goals.
Our blocks are managed for consistency, which means you get predictable flavor profiles and the most reliable chemistry possible across vintages - a lifesaver when you’re scaling production or chasing that signature house style.
Because the truth is, blending done right isn’t a scramble - it’s a strategy.
And the best winemakers don’t wait until crush to start thinking about it
